Is The Horror Genre Going Downhill?

Because of my fear of all things horror I should be the last one to comment about the quality of today's horror movies. However lately I feel like I'm watching a compilation of death scenes rather then true horror. I feel that today's horror films are a bit short on the story and think that they can just throw a bunch of disgusting scenes on screen thinking it will please movie-goers. I miss the old horror. The films that didn't have much gore onscreen yet provided a twisted story that would keep you up at night. If only movie makers would put as much time into their story as they do making someones head explode.
